Amazing what you can do....

when you really want to. Yes, I got up at 4:58 AM this morning and got ready and headed to the gym. I went to a different gym for a free week trial since it opens at 5. I really like this gym I tried out but I have a gym membership already to a gym that is only $15 a month (through my husbands work) and this one is about 4 times that amount if I do month to month. So it is hard for me to justify but it does work out better until summer gets here b/c I can go there and shower there and get home in time for me to get the girls ready and for him to leave for work.

Anyway, I did lower body strength training and it went well. I have got to get these muscles in my legs strong so that my knee issue won't be an issue any longer when I run. It is bothering me slighlty. I just felt so great this AM. I got there around 5:25 and I finished about 6:15. I was so glad I got it out of the way and I didn't make excuses b/c as you know EXCUSES DON'T BURN CALORIES, right?

I did a machine I have never done before and that was fun. The leg press machine:

I felt really strong on it for some reason and it is just fun doing something different and feeling good about it. Now, I didn't use any weight this time, just the weight of the bar which was 45 pounds. I wanted to get used to it. I am pretty sure I could put some weight on it though. I guess I will just have to experiment with how much is enough.

I plan to go to the gym tomorrow morning too while they have childcare also and knock out upper body ST. That is the good thing about this other gym is they have childcare in the event I would want to use it. Really no excuse to exercise then.

Spinning yet once again!

If you have followed me for a while you might remember that I have tried spinning 2 other times before. I just wasn't a big fan of it really. I didnt' feel like I got a good workout. I thought it was possibly because I wasn't doing it right (b/c of not having proper instruction) or I wasn't pushing myself hard enough or it was in the prime of my running and I was in decent shape. After last nights spinning class at my friends gym I think all 3 apply.

I told the teachers that I hadn't done it before b/c I wanted them to really give good instructions on how to angle my feet and how to do the resistance and what I should be feeling. They did a GREAT job at that. Then I do think I pushed myself harder and upped the resistance more than I had in the past. Plus, I haven't run any type of long distance at all over 3 miles in 2 months and so this was a little tougher for me.

The best part is that I actually enjoyed it, I felt like I got an AWESOME work out, I was sweating like I hadn't sweat in a long time and after it was done I was like "OH YEA, that felt GREAT!" I burned 379 cals in 43 minutes, average heart rate was 149. So this is comparable to me running about 4 miles at an 11 minute pace which is on the faster side for me. I could feel my legs burning while I was doing it but I am not sore today so that tells me that my legs are still in decent shape and my heart is still strong since my heart rate averaged what it does when I run.

I also can tell that this will really help strengthen my quads and hamstrings so that I when I start running again I might be able to avoid the patella tendonitis. I have been having a few slight problems with it and I know I need to consistently strengthen the muscles around it so that they do the work and it doesn't affect that tendon.

Overall, GREAT SPINNING experience and I plan to do it again.

Kettlebell's ROCK!!!

I went for my 3 hour personal training session (with a group of 6) to learn how to do kettlebells properly. I attended this with my friend Tara who has a PT at her gym that is certifed in these.

I LOVED IT!!! It felt like such a great total body workout and it WAS!! Using kettlebells works so many muscle groups at one time that it is a very effecient way to work out. I see it is a GREAT overall body workout each time. It involves strength and cardio at the same time. I didn't wear my heart rate monitor but I plan to when I do them at my gym so I can see exactly how hard I am working. We learned about 5 moves and all of them were tough. I am so glad that I did this. I think this will help me spice up my work outs so that I can do something I really enjoy so that I can start getting those 4 consistent work outs a week. I haven't been doing so hot with that. Anywhere from 2-3 has been my average and for the results I want to see I have to make it 4. I love the other strength workouts I do but this is new and fun if you know what I mean and it is just a change up for what I have been doing and I am ready for it.

Since I did this at my friends gym I have a week free pass there so I am going to a spin class tomorrow afternoon with Tara. I am looking forward to that. Those can scorch some calories too.

Anyway, I highly recommend the kettlebells BUT DO NOT do them with out proper instruction. The form is curcial in getting the most bang for your buck and also avoiding injury.

Long weekend and Kettlebell training!

YEA!! It is Memorial Weekend already. I love Mondays off. We have lots of work to be done around our house so that is our main focus this weekend. We are still considering selling our house so we are cleaning it up and making small repairs to get it ready to put it on the market.

We started a yard sale with our neighbors yesterday and we have made $200 so far. WOOT WOOT!! I am thrilled with that and just thrilled to get rid of the stuff and make some extra money to boot. It is going on today and tomorrow so maybe we will get rid of some more stuff. What we don't get rid of is going somewhere but NOT back in our house.

My exercise has been almost non existent this week. Which is totally fine. Some times life really does get in the way and I have been working hard cleaning out and pricing and such to get ready for the yard sale so that means busy evenings and late nights. I have exercised one time and then I am going to the kettlebell class tomorrow from 12-3. So I have done some stuff and I by no means have been sitting on the couch this week at all. In fact, I just realized I didn't watch any TV at all this week. Not even Dancing with the Stars or American Idol. Speaking of American Idol the winner is from Arkansas about 2 hours from me. YEAH!!!!! Doing our state proud. His wife was homecoming queen at the University of Arkansas where I work 2 years ago too so I am even more thrilled with his win b/c of that.

It is basically another form of strength training. Similar to a dumbell but shaped differently and you do different types of exercises with it. I have heard it can really stoke some calories b/c you do a lot of body weight type exercises but add in these weights and b/c of their shape and such you can do different things easier than you can with a dumbell. Just another way to make work outs fun and different. I will give you the details and my thoughs on it on Tuesday.

Quick check in

Just a quick check in to let you know that I am doing well. I had a great weekend at the Kenny concert. Chloe loved it. I am glad we took her. She had sensory overload with the crowd, the stage, the lights, the video screens, the noise and the singing. She just looked in AWE at the stage and I would look at her and she would smile from ear to ear. She actually fell asleep about 45 minutes after Kenny started and she was out for about 1 hour until it was over.

I did really well with my food all weekend considering we were out of town and on the road.

This week I am getting ready for a yard sale and that is consuming a lot of time. It starts Thursday morning so I must get everything priced tonight. Never enough time in the day. I am so ready to get rid of the stuff though. I hope most of it goes.

I worked out at lunch yesterday doing upper body ST and today I am going to do lower body ST. I haven't made myself get up in the mornings b/c I have just been so tired with working so hard from 6AM until 10PM at night. So luckily I have my lunch break to work out.

I am really excited about this Saturday b/c from 12-3 I am going to participate in a kettlebell training class. A good friend of mine, Tara, attends a gym and a trainer there specializes in kettlebells. I have been wanting to learn how to use them properly b/c they have them at my gym. This is my chance. Plus, we get to do this for only $15!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!! I love a good deal.

First goal met!

WOOT WOOT!! I met my first post-marathon goal of making it back into the 140's this morning. OH YEAH!! When I finished the marathon I was 157.2. I made a goal but I actually didn't put a time limit on it but it was to get back into the 140's even if it was 149.8. I have slowly been getting closer and I stepped on the scale this morning for my usual Friday weigh in and I saw 149.6 shining back at me. I did it several times you know to make sure it still said the same thing and it did.

I can totally tell in my mid-section and in my clothes. Amazing the difference 7.6 pounds makes.

So my next short term goal is 145. I really feel like I am losing the fat and holding on to the muscle which is my main objective. I am anxious to continue in the downward direction.

This will give me some momentum going into the weekend and help me stay strong. No splurges at all. Not even a small one for me. If I can have today, Saturday and Sunday on plan then I will let myself have something small for a treat at the beginning of the week. I have to earn it though.

We are headed to see Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum in concert Saturday night. I can't wait!

Wednesday is my Monday

FRESH START! So today, Wednesday, May 13th is my Monday. I am starting fresh today. I am re-focused. I haven't fell totally off the wagon but just hanging on the side. I have made a few food choices that I shouldn't have I have only exercised once. If I want to get to where I have pictured in my head I can't do this half way. Those days are over. I have to be 100%. I can absolutely have small splurges but they must be planned and must be in control. I have already had mine for the week so no more the rest of the week.

I still have 3 workouts to get in and then my food choices the rest of the week are going to be 100% on my plan.

Food for today:

B - slimfast shake and 1/2 cup of blackberries
S - low carb tortilla and 1 slice of 2% cheese
L - tuna, lettuce, cucs, bell pepper and balsamic ving dressing, 5 strawberries
S - 1/2 orange and protein shake
D - chicken and asparagus

Goal of 150 oz. of water.

Our updated bedroom!

Here are a few pics. Not many unfortunately. I totally should have taken before pics but to be honest it looked so blah and hodge podge that I didn't want to remember it in photo. I know what it looked like in my head and although this isn't glorius it still looks 1000 times better.

The color is "baby boy blue". The story behind the color if I haven't shared it already (I might have, my memory is awful). We were at Wal-mart several weeks ago and I said "let's look at some paint color and see what we think and if we are on the same page". So J and I went to look at them and he is glancing around and he sees a color he likes and he pulls it out and low and behold the color is titled "baby boy". Well, as you know we have two little girls and we figure it is the coaches curse and we are destined for only girls. We still might have one more baby in the next 2-3 years. So J says "this is it, this is the color, it is destiny, our next baby if conceived in this room will be a BOY!". HA HA HA! I was laughing of course and told him to dream on but if he felt that way and just loved the color we would get a quart and try it out for a sample. So we did that and we liked it. I couldn't just go with one color to choose from so I went to another store that sales these smaller samples and I got 4 others. He painted them on and that was a waste of money b/c he insisted on the baby boy blue. Soo......baby boy blue it is. I am pleased with it though. If you stick with me for another 2-3 years you can find out if J's baby boy blue room theory worked or not. HA
Yes, we have lived in our house for 5 years and just never taken the time or the money to do
this. We finally decided that it needed to be done. I wish we would have done it 5 years ago.

J working up a sweat working so hard trying to get this done so we can move our bed out of the living room. I didn't do much if any of the painting. Someone has to enertain the girls so that was my job.

Just a side note since we are talking about more babies above. With our hopeful 3rd baby in the future we are not "trying" for a boy. We want at 3rd baby regardless of sex and I obviously assume it will be a girl considering our past history and I am completely satisfied with a 3rd girl. Although, a boy would be a slight bonus. I mean you always want what you don't have, right?

Recipe, dinner and asparagus

Here is a recipe I want to share that I found in the Spring 2009 edition of Oxygen magazine.

High energy bars:
16 servings

1 cup of natural peanut butter
1 cup of honey
1 cup of old-fashioned oatmeal
1 cup of chopped dried apricots
1/2 cup of walnuts
1/2 cup of almonds

1. Combine peanut butter and honey in large nonstick pot and heat on low until runny. Mix in the oatmeal, apricots and nuts, stirring until all ingredients are well covered.

2. Line a 9x9 inch pan with waxed paper. Press the mixture into the pan. Let cool (I put my in fridge for a couple of hours before I ate one) then cut into 16 bars.

Nutrients per serving:
Calories: 260, total fat: 10 g, saturated fat: 2 g, sodium: 75mg, carbs: 37 g, fiber: 3g, sugars: 25g, protein: 6 g, iron: 1 g

My thoughts on these: VERY TASTY!! Almost taste too good b/c it is hard to stop at one but you really need to even though they are nutritions they are higher in cals, carbs and sugar. So you wouldn't want to eat 2 at a time b/c that would make it a meal and not a snack. But I do love them and I will make them again. I chopped the nuts small so that my kids would hopefully eat them. One of them so far likes them. I actually made half a batch here in the pics.

I also wanted to share my dinner from Tuesday night. One thing I love to do is saute mushrooms and onions and put them on a hamburger patty or on chicken. Tuesday night I cut up an onion and had sliced mushrooms and I just put some olive oil in a skillet and add the onions and shrooms and turn on heat of about 6 -7 and let them saute stirring them rather frequently. I don't put any seasoning of anything on it. I try to avoid the sodium. For me they have enough flavor on their own. This asparagus I just cooked in the same pan as the onions/shrooms. I thought it looked really healthy on my plate and it tasted REALLY GOOD!

Another way I often cook asparagus is in olive oil and some parmesan cheese.

Momentum is still going strong!

I am doing GREAT!! My exercise is continuing with a 5:30 AM gym workout this morning. It is such an awesome way to get my week started off right. I am just proud that I have done it 3 Mondays in a row.

My food this weekend was really good. I had major control. Saturday night we went out to dinner at a mexican place and I counted my chips as I ate them. I ate 12. Have you ever done that? I have before but rarely. I just usually dive in and eat until I am sick. I am certain that if you count your chips you won't eat as many. I was obviously trying not to eat many and I would have have gone over 15 but instead I just stopped at 12.

Sunday I was at my parents and they had no-bake cookies. I love those things. I ate 1 1/2 but that was it. I was pleased with my control. I mean I wanted 10 but I settled for 1 1/2. HA.

We were productive around the house and we finished painting our bedroom it is now "baby boy blue". It looks SO GOOD!! We absolutely love it. I will post pics of it too.

Plus, last Thursday I made these peanut butter bar things that are to die for and I took pics as I was making them so I am going to post that this week. I got the recipe from the Oxygen magazine.

Health Blogger with Wellsphere

You might notice the "Top Health Blogger" award to the right top of my page. Recently a person by the name of Dr. Rugledge left a comment on my blog saying that he skimmed my post and thought I would be a good addition to the Wellsphere community.

Not to be negative Nancy BUT I am not a great writer, I work with GREAT writers, journalist, speech writers and beyond and I know what good writing is and it is not what I do. I was flattered but told him that I am not a marathon life timer and that the marathon was just a stop on my journey to even more health and fitness goals. I will learn more about this as I go along but obvisouly my goal with my blog in general is to ENCOURAGE, EDUCATE and INSPIRE so if I can do that for a few more people then I will consider it a success. I just want people to know that if I can do it then anyone can. I turned my life around from where I was...miserable, to now feeling very confident and energized and proud of who I am. I want that for others regardless if I personally know them or not.
